AN inquest into the death of a BHP miner in 2006 is set to draw attention to company’s recent safety record.

Mark Quinn died in an explosion at the company’s Leinster nickel operation in Western Australia in February 2006 after a projectile exploded in a cannon he was working on.

BHP admitted the miner died because of its failure to provide a safe working environment and was later fined $50,000.

The inquest will run from 10 to 13 November to further investigate the incident.

It comes after the fatality of two workers at BHP’s Yandi site within two weeks earlier in 2008.

Unions are calling for an independent investigation into safety at WA’s mining sites.
