A GAS explosion has killed 18 miners in a coal mine in northeast China.

The explosion happened 252m underground, trapping miners and destroying ventilation facilities.

The State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said 81 miners were in the mine at the time of the blast, with 56 escaping unhurt and seven still missing.

China’s coal mines have been described as the most dangerous in the world. Sources say safety standards are often ignored in the quest for profits and drive to meet high demand.

Official figures reveal 3800 people died in Chinese coal mines in 2007.
