A NUMBER of free seminars for the mining industry are being held in Victoria as part of WorkSafe Victoria’s annual Work Safe Week, which runs from 26 to 30 October 2009.

Organisers say the seminars are designed to help workers and operators get up-to-date with the latest information on workplace health and safety.

‘Safety in Mines’ is an interactive workshop and presentation being held in Morwell and Stawell. It is aimed specifically at Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) in the mining industry and will provide advice and skills to help them improve safety.

‘Safety for Small Mine Operators’ is being held at Bright in north-east Victoria and is an interactive workshop where operators and WorkSafe will provide advice on common safety issues in small mines.

More than 100 seminars and events are being held across Victoria during Work Safe Week. Activities cover a range of safety issues, industries, occupations and business size. Most Work Safe Week activities are free.

Topics include manual handling, health and wellbeing, new national OHS laws, work related stress, bullying, helping injured people return to work as well as general OHS topics relevant to all employers.

WorkSafe’s Executive Director, Health and Safety, John Merritt, says Work Safe Week was designed to give people practical skills and knowledge to take back to their workplaces.

Merritt claims every week should be treated as Work Safe Week, but these seminars and events give people the opportunity to find out what more they can do to help keep their workplaces safe.Registrations for Work Safe Week 2009 are now open and Merritt encouraged anyone interested in attending this year to register online at worksafe.vic.gov.au/worksafeweek

A highlight of the Week is the prestigious 21st Annual WorkSafe Victoria Awards on 29 October at Crown Palladium and all members of the community are invited to attend.

The Awards recognise Victoria’s shining stars of workplace safety, people who have used their ideas, innovations and initiative to make Victorian workers safer.

Tickets are now on sale! $140 (+ GST) per person. A 10% discount applies to booking a table of 10. Purchase tickets online at worksafe.vic.gov.au/worksafeweek
