Former uranium smelter contaminates Sydney homes

AN inquiry into a former uranium smelter at Hunters Hill in Sydney has recommended thorough retesting of all properties on the former mining site.

The smelter operated between 1911 and 1915 on what is now the location of four properties in Nelson Parade.

The inquiry found there are “unacceptable levels of radiation in the location”, and investigators say an intensive remediation program needs to be implemented to ensure the site is not contaminated.

Health Minister, John Della Bosca, says the findings will be examined to secure the public’s safety and ensure the issue is properly dealt with.
