THE WORLD Health Organisation has identified Mount Isa, in north-west Queensland, as Australia's first mining town recognised as a 'safe community'.
The copper, lead, zinc and silver mines near Mount Isa are part of the Xstrata mining company.
While 11% of children recorded unsafe blood lead levels in 2008 it seems as though the town has overcome its problems.
The community claims groups such as the Living With Lead Alliance have campaigned to address safety issues in the region.
Mount Isa joins just 150 other towns worldwide which are recognised as safe communities.
