EPA investigates more mine waterway pollution

THE ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Agency (EPA) says it is investigating some of Queensland’s biggest mines for environmental breeches.

The body says 10 mines could have had potentially toxic water spills that flowed off-site after recent heavy rains.

The EPA says it is most concerned with the Lady Annie mine, north-west of Mount Isa, where two waterways have been contaminated with heavy metals.

The group says the waterways do not even meet the Australian Water Quality Guidelines for stock watering.

Xstrata's Mount Isa Mines are among those being investigated.
