Electrical tagging laws amended

CHANGES to OH&S regulations that require electrical equipment on mining and construction sites to be tested and tagged will come into effect on 01 January 2009.

According to WorkSafe, all portable plug-in equipment and residual current devices (RCDs) will be required to be inspected, tested and maintained by a competent person.

Regulations stipulate the name of the qualified tester must appear on the tag, along with the relevant data as specified in standard AS/NZS 3012:2003.

Inspections will identify defects affecting safety and immediately tag unsafe items as ‘out of service’ against further use.

Mining Safety Inspection (MSI) regulations also provide that portable appliances used in mining environments are tested quarterly and tagged accordingly.

Workers that bring portable items of electrical equipment to the workplace must also provide management with records of relevant testing data.
