DPI probes mining machinery accidents

THE NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Investigation Unit is investigating several incidents where miners were crushed by machinery on the job.

According to the Mines Inspectorate (DME), six workers were severely injured when they were struck or crushed by mobile machinery in four separate incidents.

The DME is urging mines to identify and control risky behaviour and establish control zones and barricades around machinery.

Mines should review their OHS management systems and ensure miners and machinery operators communicate in an effective manner to reduce the chance of accidents from occurring.

The Inspectorate is prompting managers to refer to previous safety alerts and information concerning machine interfaces and reference them when undertaking risk assessments.
