THE DEPARTMENT of Mines and Energy (DME) has issued a safety alert after an oxygen self-rescue unit was found to be contaminated during a practical demonstration.

Mine rescuers were conducting a training exercise using the oxygen devices when a member found the breathing circuit of his unit was contaminated with yellow powder.

Additional units have been found to be unserviceable and showing signs of damage.

The DME is urging mines using self-rescue breathing apparatus to review and inspect the devices.

It is also suggesting mines review training procedures of rescue equipment so workers are aware of proper handling and storage procedures.
