DME prompts electrical safety in underground mines

THE Queensland Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has released a safety alert regarding the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in underground coal mines.

According to the DME, the resources boom and increased employee numbers have led to a number of electrical equipment failures and workmanship issues in Queensland mines.

The DME says poor electrical and operational standards have resulted in a number of events that compromise safety in underground mines.

The DME is urging mines to clearly detail work standards and ensure systems are in place to supervise and audit the quality of miners’ work.
