THE death toll from a coal mine fire in northeast China has risen to 26 after rescuers retrieved another seven bodies.

Five miners remain missing after a fire swept through the Fuhua coal mine in Hegang City on 20 September 2008.

Preliminary investigations blame the fire on spontaneous combustion, and five people in connection with the accident have been taken into custody.

A rescue effort to find the remaining miners continues.
