CSIRO has dedicated more than $3m in funding to help the Australian coal industry to improve safety and reduce its environmental impact.

The Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding package will support several CSIRO research projects to develop safer and more efficient technologies.

CSIRO’s ‘Maximising the Value of Mining’ research leader, Dr Hua Guo, says the projects will cover a range of issues that are of particular importance to the industry.

Research will focus on developing navigation and automation systems, improving dust control, and measuring the performance of low-density explosives for open cut operations.

The funding will also support projects to improve gas drainage, reduce coal mine greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce the effect of longwall mining on groundwater systems.

Dr Guo says the work will enable CSIRO to make a “significant contribution to the international competitiveness and sustainability of Australia’s mining industry and the nation’s long-term prosperity”.
