A COAL-rich province in China will dramatically reduce its number of coal mines over the next two years to improve mining safety.

The Shanxi provincial government is slashing the region’s number of coal mines from 2,840 to only 1,414 by 2010 to boost work safety and reduce exploitation.

The government will encourage mergers and acquisitions within the industry to retain an annual output rate of 942Mt in the province.

The Shanxi region currently accounts for one third of China’s coal output. However, it also holds the world’s worst records for safety and corruption.
