RUSSELL Crowe appeared on the US prime time on the David Letterman show claiming that Cape Alumina’s planned mining operation would be environmentally damaging and threaten the safety of the area’s unique plant and animal species.
Crowe claimed that the Wenlock River operated as a water filter and was home to some unique plant and animal species.
Cape Alumina has since hit back saying hydrological studies done in preparation for mining refute Crowe's claim.
Cape Alumina has been conducting environmental studies on a 135,000-hectare pastoral lease on Cape York after winning a court battle to access about 15 per cent of the property, purchased by Steve Irwin's family company Silverback Properties after Irwin's death in 2006.
Neverthelesss, Crowe’s plea collected a flood of more than 13,000 signatures on an online petition, "Save Steve's Place", taking the total number of signatures to 135,000.
The company expects mining operations to begin in 2013.
