Bill could allow unions to enter any workplace in SA

A NEW Bill proposing changes to health and safety laws could allow unions to enter any workplace in South Australia.

If the State Government’s attempt to increase union powers succeeds business costs would be significantly increased.

The laws would allow unions access to premises on the grounds of health and safety checks and give them the right to demand any documents or computer records relating to the health or welfare of any employee.

South Australia and Tasmania are the only states which do not allow unions the right of entry for health and safety purposes.

The new Bill has been quietly circulated by the government since December 2008 with submissions closing in March 2009.

Opposition youth spokesman Iain Evans says it is an attempt by unions to get into workplaces to recruit young workers. He said the idea of making health and safety checks was just a smokescreen.
