BHP upgrades crane safety in WA

KONECRANES has completed safety upgrades to a number of cranes and hoists at BHP Billiton's Port Hedland facility to bring the equipment to a higher safety standard.

The equipment manufacturer has upgraded 22 chain hoists at the West Australian iron ore project to convert the gear to new compliance levels.

BHP developed the Fatal Risk Control Protocol 10 (FRCP10) standard in 2005 to optimise workplace safety standards. The benchmark requires that some equipment is fitted with digital load cell displays to ensure safety in loading operations.

As conventional overload devices on chain hoists are not capable of supplying information on load cell displays, Konecranes developed safety kits which are being retrofitted to BHP’s existing equipment.

The kits integrate load sensing into the connection pins on the chain hoist, allowing displays function without the loss of lifting height.

According to BHP, the FRCP10 standard is enabling the company to establish world-leading safety standards at its global operations.
