BHP mine safety risk too close to heart

BHP BILLITON Illawarra Coal says mining won’t jeopardise the safety of the Hume Highway, New South Wales.

There has been speculation that the miner’s longwall blocks which run underneath the Hume Highway and the main railway line could damage the infrastructure, putting lives at risk.

BHP Billiton claims management plans have been put in place to ensure any change in the land does not damage nearby infrastructure. Although some general subsidence is said to occur, none of a stepping nature will occur on the road or railway.

The company claims it is working with the Roads and Traffic Authority to minimise any impacts.
