BHP HAS shut its West Australian Yandi iron ore mine until further notice while it investigates a fatality.

Details of the incident are being established with the assistance of emergency workers and police.

It is the third fatality at a BHP mine in less than a month. The mine will stay closed while the cause of the incident is investigated.

BHP says its safety standards needs to improve, expressing disappointment at the 11 fatalities in 2007 at various sites across the globe.
