SAFETY concerns are being investigated following the malfunction of the automatic ore haulage system at BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine.

The fully-automated Clark Shaft, which supplies ore from underground to the surface for processing, failed during operations on 6 October 2009.

Nobody was injured but the mining company says the safety of its workforce will take priority in determining any restart of haulage the operation.

In the meantime underground mining is continuing with ore being hoisted to the surface via the secondary Whenan Shaft.

BHP Billiton and the South Australian government are investigating the incident.
