BHP Billiton concerned with rail contractor’s safety

BHP Billiton says it has temporarily suspended the construction of a new rail line in the Pilbara region due to safety concerns with the contractor, Macmahon Holdings /Leighton Holdings joint venture.

The mining company says that following a health and safety review, it was concerned standards were not being met. The contractor has been asked to meet the group’s requirements before recommencing work.

BHP Billiton says work is expected to resume in coming days.
