Bendigo mine rescue competition boosts safety awareness

THE MINERALS Council of Australia says mine rescue teams are the first on scene at an accident and the training is essential.

On 7 August 2009, such training took place at Bendigo where nine teams took part in a mine rescue completion.

The Stawell Gold Mine was among the teams that engaged in the training designed to improve safety in the mining industry.

Minerals Council of Australia representative Megan Davison says the emergency services personnel from the fire authorities and the police and search and rescue certainly have a very important role, but there are a certain number of skills sets that only the mining community has the ability to deliver.
