Beaconsfield mine ‘continually’ requested watchdog

THE FORMER manager of the Beaconsfield Gold mine has told an inquest he “continually” asked Tasmania’s safety watchdog to inspect the site.

Matthew Gill says the mine would have benefited with more assistance from the watchdog, so it could be inspected from a “different set of eyes”.

According to the former manager, when the inspector finally evaluated the site - six months prior to a fatal rock fall in April 2007 - he did not conduct underground investigations.

Safety results were requested two weeks prior to the incident, but the mine was told they could not be discussed until May 2007.

Gill has hit back at claims the mine was compromising safety for profits. He will continue to give evidence on 24 and 25 September 2008..
