Basic safety failures lead to industrial deaths

FAILURES to take basic workplace safety steps cause most industrial deaths in Australia, according to an industry professional.

Former Australian Workers’ Union boss, Bill Shorten, says workplaces are continuing to ignore recommendations from accident inquiries, which is putting more miners at risk.

He is joining with other unions to endorse a government bill to set up Safe Work Australia, a body to bring together health and safety legislation and workers’ compensation laws.

Shorten suggests better education and training, changes to equipment and standards, and more government oversight will help workplaces learn from accidents.
