Another BHP safety incident

BHP Billiton has suspended rail services after a worker was hit by a train at the miner’s Nelson Point stockyard, Western Australia on 8 April 2009.

Authorities say that the individual was treated at site and has been taken to hospital for observation. At this stage his injuries appear minor.

A spokeswoman said BHP Billiton Iron Ore was treating the incident seriously and a full investigation team will travel to Nelson Point to begin a thorough investigation.

BHP will have to deliver a detailed report into its safety practices in the Pilbara to the state’s mining engineer in late-April 2009.

One of its two loading areas in Port Hedland has been affected and all yard activity at Nelson Point was suspended but is reportedly now back in production.
