ACTU slams Rudd’s workplace safety laws

THE ACTU will launch an attack on the Rudd Government’s proposed changes to workplace health and safety laws.

The ad campaign will reportedly warn the government against caving in to business demands in negotiations over national laws governing workplace safety.

This is the union’s first big advertising blitz since the anti-Work Choices election campaign.

In NSW, the draft legislation will see unions lose the right to prosecute employers for safety breaches that lead to serious accidents. It will also reverse legal onus of proof on employees to show they did not contribute to an unsafe work environment.

ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence says the draft legislation is unacceptable and safety standards needed to be improved, not reduced in any shape or form.
