ENERGY and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor says the safety of workers and the environment are paramount to the Victorian Government.

The statement followed the Minister’s announcement that the Government will provide $3.25 million over five years to Monash University for geotechnical engineering research and development.

Batchelor also announced the Government had appointed a team of experts, with international mining experience, to a Technical Review Board that would provide advice to the Government on mine and quarry stability.

The work carried out by the new geotechnical R&D group will include research into mine stability, geotechnical and hydrogeological issues.

The group will also provide on-going expertise and advice to the mining industry in the Latrobe Valley.

A foundation chair and scholarships for PhD students are among the other things being funded under the agreement.

Batchelor claims this research and the expertise of the Technical Review Board would boost the geotechnical performance and knowledge within the Victorian mining industry.
