Safety levy for mines

A new safety levy is set to be introduced for mining and petroleum operations.

Following the granting of assent for the Mines Safety and Inspection Amendment Bill, supporting regulations for the bill have begun to be drafted, with the Government aiming to fund the changes via a safety levy.

The new charges will be billed as a 'Safety and Inspection' levy, which will cost approximately $250 per employee, and will be implemented before 30 June 2010.

However, companies with less than ten employees would be exempt from the tax.

A dangerous goods safety rate has also been slated for implementation on 1 July 2011.

The announcement of the new levy follows the West Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum creating a ministerial panel to formulate and deliver a best practice safety regulations regime for the resource sector.
