FIGURES from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate that poor literacy of Australian workers is creating safety risks.

The Bureau says that almost half of all working Australians would fail a basic literacy test.

The Australian Industry Group and the Federal Government are launching a new national program to address the issue. The group's chief executive Heather Ridout says there are major safety issues that can not be addressed unless people are literate.

The organisation will be conducting trials across 10 enterprises in four states over the months ahead. They will involve 80 to 120 hours of literacy and numeracy training in addition to vocational education.
