AN INNOVATION said to increase mine safety while reducing carbon emissions has taken out the Queensland Mining Industry Innovation Awards in Townsville.

Oz Minerals lighting plant auto-start system was developed to reduce workplace injuries. The automatic system is said to minimise mining vehicle accidents by automatically starting lighting plants. Previously, plants had to be manually lit.

According to the company, the system also significantly reduces carbon emissions by cutting the running time of diesel-driven lighting plants by 2.5 hours each day.

These reductions in diesel use would save over $360,000 per annum.
