PNG mine construction halted over safety concerns

CONSTRUCTION at the Ramu nickel-cobalt mine in Papua New Guinea has been halted by local authorities due to health and safety concerns.

Papua New Guinea authorities ordered the project owners, including majority owner China Metallurgical Construction Group, to improve its health and safety performance.

The health and safety concerns at the site have previously caused violent clashes between the Chinese and PNG elements of the workforce.

Highlands Pacific has a 8.56% stake in the project. The company says it recognises the importance of health and safety, and does not expect the ordered improvements to delay the project by much.
