Mount Isa MP Betty Kiernan has supported the methods being undertaken to address high lead levels in children in the Queensland town.
This follows a report published by the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA), which stated that on average one child will exceed safe lead levels every nine days.
It showed that more than a tenth of the 400 children born every year have blood levels above current guidelines.
The report went on to say not enough was being done to remediate this.
However, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has come out saying recent testing showed that only 5% of children had unacceptably high levels of lead.
She added that every child had been tested twice in the past two years, and that the number of children with high levels has been reduced from 7.5%.
The major miner in Mt Isa, Xstrata, is currently defending a class action relating to high lead blood levels.
