SPEAKERS at the 21st Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference have addressed the congregation on matters from the importance of a nationally consistent mining legislation to regular health checks.
The Hon Clive Brown, Chair of the National Mine Safety Framework Steering Group says that a nationally consistent legislation would allow for better health and safety data collection and improve efficiency for companies working across state borders.
While nurse Tammy Farrell, who presented ‘The Real Man’s Tool Box’, urged mine workers to think about their risk factors for heart disease, bowel and prostate cancer and to act on them. Farrell says too many men delay health checkups, even when they experience symptoms, to the cost of themselves and their families.
Special guests of this year’s conference also include scientist and science broadcaster Karl Kruszelnicki who will chair the safety innovations awards judging and SBS television’s Jenny Brockie who will facilitate a panel session on raising the bar to achieve zero harm.
A huge range of papers will be presented from leadership and safety, to fitness for work policies and design improvements for mining equipment.
The conference is hosted jointly by the Queensland Government, the Queensland Resources Council and mining unions the CFMEU and AWU.
