Company pleads guilty over miner’s death

A mining contractor has pleaded guilty to causing the death of miner at an open cut coal mine in the Latrobe Valley in 2006.

Silcar pleaded guilty to a count of failing to provide a safe work place following the death of Richard Gauci after he was killed by a falling beam while removing clamps on a conveyor at Yallourn in October 2006.

Gauci died from massive head injuries.

Silcar will face a maximum penalty of up to $966 000 over the incident.

Three other companies are also facing charges over the fatality, with court dates yet to be set.
