CONSTRUCTION, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union's (CFMEU) Northern division president Ian Murray says the streamlining of work safety laws across Australia will be detrimental to the Hunter's coal industry.

Murray has suggested uniform safety laws could enable mine employers to take shortcuts on safety.

Murray is set to become the union's new national vice-president by October 2009.
